Ports 1961: Tia CibaniMick Margo Member Since Spring 2008What was the inspiration for Spring/Summer 2008?Inspired by the spirit of such popular cultural revivals, and by the spontaneous African sense of style, Ports 1961 finds its muse in the ebullience of this land. We look to the women of Africa to learn color, form, and the innovative use of everyday objects and common materials. A diverse mix of mud cloth, tie dye, and neo-safari shapes uniquely blend contemporary influences with traditional styles. Humble fabrics of gingham and poplin are contrasted with gold matellasé and polished silk with a humid sheen. By rolling, wrapping, twisting and folding we discovered unexpected and striking silhouettes. For this season, we focused especially on scrolled fabrics, which are molded into organic shapes, provoking attention to the shoulder line while keeping the body linear, tubular or cinched. But most of all, Collection Safiri has been developed as a tribute to Siti Binti Saad, and to the great African legacy she represents – a culture of strength, beauty, and creativity. |
